Last week we hosted a fundraising supper in aid of a new project in Belarus, initiated by The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Totnes and South Hams, and we were overwhelmed by the generosity and support we received.

The evening was dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the charity’s new initiative, To Belarus with Love, which will see the organisation renovate a pedagogical centre in Stolin. The centre provides a place of safety for children who have been removed from their homes because they are being abused, are in need or are in danger. The home will also form the basis for foster care training and processes in the local area. While there is an existing building, it is in desperate need of attention, currently in a neglected state and with little by way of comfort, toys and general warmth.

During the supper, link founder Sue Wyeth, talked about the work that the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Totnes and South Hams does as well as explaining the purpose and processes for this dedicated project. Meanwhile, guests enjoyed a two course Winking Prawn meal for £20, all of which is going towards the To Belarus with Love project.

The evening raised a total of £1,984, which will go a long way towards the renovation project. It was also an occasion of tremendous good will and community support for the charity, which operates entirely on the time and efforts of local volunteers in the South Hams area.

This month, Jane from the Winking Prawn is joining Sue on a trip to Belarus. Together they will see the home and meet the children who are there, and will be ascertaining in greater detail the logistics and requirements to get the renovation underway.

The Winking Prawn and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Totnes and South Hams thank everyone who attended the evening, as well as all those who have donated, shown an interest or lent their support to the charity.
